What does poor investment performance mean to me? It means you will have to pay more to get the same! Eg. Fred has to pay £600 per month more than Barney - just to get the same pension - because his fund is growing by less than Barney's..more
Example:
Fred is 40 and has a pension fund worth £100,000. If he pays no more in and it grows by 5% pa for the next 20 years it will grow to around £200,000. Barney is also 40 with £100,000 in his pension fund. If he pays no more in and it grows by 9% pa (4% more than Fred's) it will grow to around £400,000. Because Fred's pension is growing by 4% less than Barney's, in order to get the same fund after 20 years he would need to pay in over £600 per month extra over that same 20 years!..Less
